This year marks an exciting milestone in artcommune gallery’s 17-year journey of championing Singapore’s finest artists. As we extend our presence across Asia, we are delighted to partner with Liang Gallery—one of Taiwan’s leading modern art galleries, with a distinguished 33-year legacy—on Mirror Straits, a joint exhibition opening in Taipei this September, followed by our debut presentation at ART TAIPEI 2026 in October. 

 

We warmly welcome you to our Taipei Send-Off Preview, featuring a dynamic selection of works by our artists participating in both Mirror Straits and ART TAIPEI 2026. On view at artcommune gallery from 22 July to 2 August, this presentation offers a rare opportunity to encounter these works before they journey to Taiwan.

About Mirror Straits Exhibition in Taipei

Mirror Straits, a Taiwan-Singapore joint presentation, opened earlier this year at artcommune gallery from 17 January to 15 February. Bringing together 8 artists from Taiwan and Singapore across prewar and postwar generations, the exhibition traces parallel yet interconnected trajectories in the development of modern art in both societies. Through works by Chen Cheng-Po, Yang San-Lang, Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng, Liao Shiou-Ping, Lee Chung-Chung, Lim Tze Peng, and Wong Keen.

 

Curated by Taiwanese independent curator Takamori Nobuo, whose research explores the often-overlooked cultural connections between Taiwan and the Global South, Mirror Straits reveals how these artists negotiated tradition and modernity, identity during an earlier colonial and later globalised era, while continually reimagining the visual language of Chinese art within changing cultural contexts. 

 

Following its Singapore debut, this landmark exhibition will travel to Taipei in an expanded presentation at Liang Gallery, where it will be on view from 12 September to 18 October 2026. The Taipei edition features an expanded roster of artists, with Liang Gallery presenting its selection of Taiwanese artists, while our representing artists from Singapore are Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng, Tan Choh Tee, and Wong Keen.

artcommune gallery is pleased to announce our inaugural participation in ART TAIPEI 2026 with a presentation of works by an intergenerational group of Singapore artists whose practices reflect diverse and evolving explorations of colour, form, and materiality. 

 

Our featured artists include Cheong Soo Pieng (1917–1983), a pioneering master whose inventive synthesis of Eastern and Western aesthetics redefined the language of regional modernism; Wong Keen (b. 1942), a leading 2nd-generation master celebrated for his wide-ranging exploration of subjects such as the lotus, the burger, and the flesh, which traverse abstraction and figuration; Boo Sze Yang (b. 1965), whose contemplative paintings investigate the fragile equilibrium between permanence and impermanence, spiritual and material aspirations, and the quiet tension of living within a rapidly transforming city; Nathan Yong (b. 1971), an acclaimed designer and artist whose sculptural works reimagine the poetic potential of industrial materials and forms; and Tam Kwan Yuen (b. 1986), a young watercolour artist know for his hyper-realistic paintings of metropolitan landscapes and urban night scenes, capturing the rhythm, atmosphere, and spirit of the contemporary city.
