Singapore watercolour maestro Ong Kim Seng (b. 1945, Singapore), BBM. AWS. DF. NWS has been painting full-time since 1985 and among the most highly-acclaimed watercolour artists in Asia. He was awarded the Cultural Medallion in Visual Arts by the Republic of Singapore in 1990 and has to date received 8 awards from the prestigious American Watercolour Society (AWS) in New York. His recent watercolours in the California style are particularly noteworthy for having pushed the envelope in form and colour.
This full-colour catalogue was published in conjunction with the artist’s exhibition, Visions of Sojourns: Paintings of Ong Kim Seng at The Arts House from 25 August - 2 September 2018. Featuring over 50 colour plates and a detailed discussion — self-penned by the artist — of his observations and techniques in tackling different scenes and stylistic devices in watercolour, the book provides a broad survey of Ong Kim Seng’s watercolour art and accomplishments in the recent decade. The collection of images also highlights works completed by the artist during overseas workshops and for rare projects undertaken earlier in his career, including a 2012 painting of Horsburgh Lighthouse on the island of Pedra Branca (over the years Ong Kim Seng has painted all the lighthouses belonging to Singapore, including the one on Pulau Pisang in the Straits of Malacca), and a 2017 painting of 38 Oxley Road (House of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew). The latter was composed en plein air in front of the house on the same day he was producing a painting of 38 Oxley Road commissioned by the late Minister Mentor’s family.
